Versace – Spring/Summer 2017 Ready-To-Wear Collection

The Versace show this evening celebrated the strength of women. Yesterday, Gigi Hadid, who made an appearance here on Versace’s runway, was grabbed, scooped up off the ground in the street by notorious celebrity tormentor Vitalii Sediuk (who managed to pass by her bodyguards no less). She kicked her legs in the air and then elbow-jabbed the bearded prankster clean in the face. Once let go, the attacker ran off and she attempted to pursue him. Before her bodyguard – finally, he did something – pulled her away. Strength of women? She’s the ideal pin-up, alongside other star turns this evening from her sister Bella (between the two of them they have walked almost every runway in Milan), Naomi Campbell, and Doutzen Kroes.

And so, what does a Versace superwoman wear? A nylon anorak. (Admittedly, it doesn’t sound very Versace, nor very superwoman does it?) But Donatella Versace continued to explore a sports theme. “Sportswear is the future of fashion,” she said, adding, “To make it unique and luxurious is the challenge I took this season.” Ultra lightweight nylon looked expensive, worked into billowy drawstring anoraks and ruched asymmetric mini dresses; retro-style zip-up sports tops also featured, alongside colour-blocked motocross trousers, practical bonded waterproof macs, and checkerboard prints, all grounded in spongy flatforms with functional straps. “This is a collection that is all about a woman’s freedom… freedom of activity, freedom to fight for their ideas, freedom to be whomever you want to be.”

Freedom of movement, too, like a black kick-flared trouser suit in technical jersey, which looked stretchy enough for a pilates class. Less so, the finale of Versace crystal chainmail dresses intricately patchworked together into fluid columns and minis – but they would certainly take you dancing around nightclub floors ‘til dawn.
